What to Do Every Season to Prepare Your Home

Owning a home can be challenging adventure and a great blessing! Taking care of your home properly could be viewed as a part-time job. From maintaining the air conditioner and furnace to cleaning and simple home repair, there is always lots to do. Here is a seasonal checklist to make sure you don’t miss anything:

AUTUMN: Generally, temperatures decrease across the country in this season and it is a good time to winterize your home. Here are some of the major tasks that need to be handled.

* Turn on your furnace to see if it is functioning properly. Expect a bit of a musty smell, which is easily cleared out by opening windows. Purchase and change furnace filters. If there is a repair necessary, make an appointment with a trusted heating and cooling company sooner, rather than later.

* Purchase draft blockers for any doors or windows that need them. Also, check and seal all windows and outdoor structures that are in need.

* If you live in an area where it is necessary, switch your windows to storm windows.

* Be sure your ceiling fan blades are spinning clockwise which will drive warm air downward.

* Perform a plumbing check throughout your home. Look for leaks that need fixing. Wrap any pipes that need to be guarded from freezing temperatures.

* Clean out all gutters and dispose of yard debris. Stack usable fire wood.

WINTER: You will delight in the beauty of winter since you have already wisely completed your fall chores. Make a fire and some hot chocolate to drink!

* If you do not own smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors, you may want to install some. This is also a smart time of year to replace all the batteries in any detectors that you have.

* Make sure your fire extinguisher is working too.

SPRING: This time of year the world seems to collectively stretch and yawn. Time to get outdoors!

* Clean every room thoroughly. Sort, reorganize and give away unwanted items.

* Have your chimney swept.

* Turn on the air conditioner and make sure it is cold and working well.

* Create an outdoor space and bring out the patio furniture.

SUMMER: Enjoy kicking back in your outdoor space and consuming barbecue with family and friends!

* Install a bug zapper to help keep insects under control.

* Do any big tasks, such as plumbing upgrades during this season.

Everyone in the family benefits from a well kept home.
